This goes to anyone that is the majority group.  Of anything, really, but especially with sexuality and gender.  It’s not good to generalize cis or straight people, but if you want the respect of gay, lesbian, and trans*/queer people, you have to educate yourself and be an ally.
You can start here, in terms of education:
A list of gender terms is here.
A trans 101 is here.
A quick etiquette lesson when talking to a trans person (what not to say/ask) can be seen here and here.

Why I’m a straight supporter of LGBT rights.

Because for some reason, this seems to be something that comes up a lot, and people have questioned my sexuality.  And honestly, I don’t really care.  If someone thinks I’m a lesbian or bi, it makes no difference to me, because I know who I am.  But it makes me angry that people seem to think that you HAVE to be at least bi or pan to support gay rights.  I’m straight, but not narrow.

I want to make a difference, an impact, and I believe in this.  I want to help make change.

LGBT support.

This is all I have so far, I know its very insufficient.

The Trevor Project is basically LGBT suicide prevention.  Their 24 hour hotline is here.

It Gets Better Project.

Music always helps as well.  Some LGBT songs:

It Gets Better by Todrick Hall.

Make It Stop by Rise Against. (one of the best.)

Aftermath by Adam Lambert.

Freaks In Love by Elton John.

books:

Religion and sexuality.

K so. This is a book about gay support.  (p.s. if you go to your city’s library website and type in “lgbt, transexual, lesbian, gay, etc, you’ll most likely get a lot of results.  I had hundreds.  The following will be books with lesbian/gay/transsexual/bi or pansexual main characters.

Oranges are not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson

Love and Lies and Hard Love by Ellen Wittlinger - lesbian.

Parrotfish by Ellen Wittlinger - FTM.

Between Mom and Jo by Julie Ann Peters - from the point of view of a boy with lesbian mothers.

Suicide Notes is FANTASTIC - gay.

Kissing Kate (also exceptionally wonderful.) - lesbian.

There is so many more, I’m in love with reading so much and just asdfghjkl.

Wonderful people that were/are successful and loved in media culture that were gay:

Freddie Mercury.

Adam Lambert.

Elton John.

Ellen DeGeneres.

Neil Patrick Harris.

David Burtka.

And although I’m completely LGBT friendly and would love to talk to any of you, I’m completely in the closet about my gender confusion and probably can’t be a huge help when it comes to relating.  But these people can, and they are all kind-hearted, sweet people, so if you need someone to relate:

gay females:

Tori.

Sarah.

gay males:

Ashley.

bisexual:

-boy needed-

Kristina.

pansexual:

Taylor.

bigender:

Alex.

trangender

Timmy.

Blue.

Unlabeled in any way about sexuality or gender:

M.

LGBT friendly/accepting:

I could list so many people, but I’d like to ask first, so ask if you feel like you could really contribute here.
